Brief History:
        The last of an ancient, presumably extinct race, Knuckles knows very little about his heritage or his home, Angel Island. Orphaned since birth, or so he assumes, as far back as he can remember Knuckles has been doing exactly what he does to this very day: guarding Angel Island and the Emeralds that keep it aloft from any who might seek to do them harm. Thousands of years ago, his race was responsible for a tragedy which unleashed the god "Chaos" and destroyed the world. Since that time, they have guarded the Master Emerald and the seven Super Emeralds without fail.
        For many years Knuckles' ancestral task was an easy one. Since Angel Island is suspended hundreds of feet above the ground, the echidna guardian did not get many visitors, which suited him just fine. Then one day the would-be-dictator Doctor Eggman crash-landed his Death Egg on Angel Island. Knuckles quickly cornered Eggman, but the mad doctor was more than prepared for Knuckles: not with weapons of war, but with that most dangerous weapon of all, his tongue. Eggman told Knuckles he was like he, a guardian of another set of emeralds, the Chaos Emeralds, which an evil hedgehog and fox had stolen from him. Sympathetic to Eggman, Knuckles set out to help the doctor, confronting Sonic & Tails many times as they made their way through Angel Island. This gave Eggman the time he needed to locate the power source that kept the great island aloft: the Master Emerald. Eggman knew the Master Emerald would be able to not only get his Death Egg up and running again, but power it indefinitely as well.
        By the time Knuckles learned the truth about Eggman, the scheming scientist had already made off with the Master Emerald, giving the echidna a nasty shocking in the process. Since the Super Emeralds were left untouched, Angel Island did not immediatedly crash into the ocean, but fall it began, and Knuckles had twenty-four hours to get his emerald back. Sonic and Tails were already ahead of him, since he showed them the way to the Sky Sanctuary, but he would not be deterred. He too made his way up to Sky Sanctuary, and by himself he was able to defeat and destroy Eggman's latest hedgehog doppelganger, Mecha Sonic. While Knuckles defeated Mecha Sonic, the blue hedgehog and Tails ascended to the Death Egg and retrieved the Master Emerald, sending the shattered Death Egg crashing back down to the ground once and forevermore. As much as Knuckles hated to admit it, he could not have gotten the Master Emerald back without the aid of "that stupid hedgehog" and his friend. Despite himself, Knuckles learned from this experience.
        Since this time, Eggman has been a constant threat to the safety of Angel Island. Knuckles has adjusted to this new state of life, organizing a group dubbed the Chaotix to assist him. Through the years, his goal has always remained the same, but he has been a bit more accepting of visitors, depending on who they may be; he still adamantly refuses to let Sonic or Eggman on his island for any reason. Twice in as many years Knuckles has been forced to leave Angel Island to fulfill his duties: the first when Eggman unleashed the god dwelling inside the Master Emerald known as Chaos (shattering the Master Emerald in the process), and the second time when the Emerald was shattered once more by Eggman, for reasons currently unknown. After the debacle with the 'Evil Trio' and the Biolizard, he retired once again to his island, hoping to finally enjoy a bit of peace and quiet again.

Attacks

Rolling Spin: Once Knuckles starts running, he can curl down and roll into a battle, moving forward at an impressive speed. This attack is primarily meant for breaking barriers or destroying grounded enemies.
Spin Attack: Like Sonic, Shadow, and several other individuals, Knuckles can curl himself into a ball and leap through the air as an attack. Having dreadlocks instead of spines, Knuckles' spin attack is less damaging, coupled with his lower jumping ability leading to an overall weaker attack that has it's uses.
Spin Dash: After observing Sonic use this move to defeat him, Knuckles decided to learn to perform it himself. Knuckles' spin dash is slower than Sonic's, but much more powerful.
Drill Claw: While airborne, Knuckles can dash downward, digging into the ground. This move is usually used to find items or to secure an escape route.
Spiral Uppercut: Knuckles rockets straight up fist first, surrounded by a red aura. This move is used to hit aerial opponents or occasionaly as a defense maneuver, since the aura deflects low-level attacks.
Punch Attack: Knuckles performs a one-two punch combo, then rears back and charges forward with a third dash punch, mantled in red light. This attack can usually take out anyone in it's path.
Hammer Punch: Knuckles punches the ground, creating a tremor that knocks his opponent to their knees. This attack has very limited uses, but can be used to get an advantage in a battle.
Thunder Arrow: Calling upon an ancient echidna spell, Knuckles can cause a thunderbolt to strike his opponent. The bolt will not only damage his foe but temporarily disorient them as well. Knuckles requires either rings or Chaos Emeralds to use this attack.
Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack: Knuckles gathers his ki until he is glowing red, then charges at his opponent at speeds so fast he leaves after-images in his wake, flying around his opponent and punching until his opponent is defeated or he loses his concentration.
Hyper Fissure: In his "Hyper Knuckles" form, Knuckles is able to punch walls and ground hard enough to trigger violent earthquakes.

Abilities

Running: Knuckles is a fairly decent runner when he absolutely has to be, capable of moving over 200 miles per hour. However, he does not enjoy running, and refrains from it when he can.
Gliding: Knuckles cannot fly, but he can glide. This seems to be an ability inherit to echidnas, although Knuckles has perfected the manuever through years of practice.
Climbing: Using his trademarked knuckles, Knuckles can climb walls. He can only climb walls he is able to sinks his knuckles into, or at least get a good hold on.
Digging: Although his Shovel Claws help him quite a bit in this area, Knuckles is capable of burrowing into the ground on his own, and can even dig his own tunnels through subterranean passageways.
Swimming: Knuckles is a fairly proficient swimmer, having learned the skill in the many submerged ruins of Angel Island such as Hydrocity.
Athlete: Knuckles is an echidna who keeps himself in peak physical condition. His athletic forte is martial arts; he has trained himself in several different styles.
Strength: Knuckles is much more powerful than he looks. Within that small red echidna frame rests the strength, pound for pound, of an ant. Knuckles is strong enough to punch holes right through steel, lift objects many times heavier than he, and duke it out with the likes of Metal Sonic.
Chaos Power: Knuckles has a natural link with the Master Emerald first and foremost, but this link extends to the Chaos and Super Emeralds as well, and he is able to use them all in many different applications, most of which are spells handed down from his echidna ancestors. He can sense the Emeralds from anywhere, and use their powers to transform into "Hyper Knuckles," a higher state of being which grants him severly enhanced speed and strength as well as complete invulnerability.

Weapons

Shovel Claws: A set of steel claws Knuckles can slip on over his normal gloves. Using these, Knuckles is able to burrow deep into the ground, often emerging with some sort of treasure, usually rings.
Air Necklace: An echidna artifact that allows Knuckles to breathe underwater indefinitely. He does not wear it all the time.

Personality: Knuckles is very focused and driven in his mission to protect Angel Island, almost to the point of obsession. He has trained himself extensively, and as a result he is very serious, clever, and downright rigid in his mission. He is also very perceptive, seeing things that others often miss, hence his hobby of treasure hunting. He often finds it hard to relax, and can be single-minded sometimes. This often leads to his being easily tricked by others (usually Dr. Eggman). Because of this, he is naturally distrustful of most new people, and for a long time has trusted only the Chaotix, although he tolerates Shadow and to some degree even respects him, although he'd die before he admitted it. Sonic just pisses him off though.
